Sometimes the first sign of lice is simply a child scratching more than usual — but there are a few things parents can look for at home.
Tiny white or tan specks close to the scalp
Nits (lice eggs) are often mistaken for dandruff at first. The difference is that dandruff flakes usually brush or slide off easily, while nits are firmly attached to the hair shaft. If the speck is hard to slide down the hair, it’s most likely a nit.Red bumps or irritation near the nape of the neck
